Summary

  • Over half of the U.S. owns a pet — That comes to around 86.9 million people who could potentially want to bring their pet out to eat, drink, or travel.
  • Pets don’t actually pose a health risk at restaurants — Contrary to popular belief, a healthy, vaccinated dog free of parasites poses an extremely low risk to human health when in a dining setting.
  • Laws are catching up — More and more we’re seeing laws placing the choice of whether to allow pets into certain spaces up to the owner of an establishment.

Defining pet-friendly and pet-perfect

Pet-friendly is a topic that is gaining popularity, but what does it mean? At the end of the day, it’s a place or establishment suitable for pets, where they can attend and stay the same as you. This term applies to restaurants that welcome pets to their outdoor seating areas or hotels that allow pets to stay on the property and in the room with you. Unfortunately, pet-friendly is a relatively ambiguous phrase. It can adopt a different meaning depending on who is using it. So, while a hotel might say it’s pet-friendly, it might have many restrictions while a different hotel chain has fewer or none.

The difference between being pet-friendly and pet-perfect lies in the priority of pets and their owners. Being pet-perfect means designing an establishment in such a way that it puts as much priority and emphasis on amenities and features for pets as it does for people. This could mean additional safety features, but also activities, treats, and even isolation for when pets need some alone time.

Being pet-perfect is extremely important in today’s society because as we know, pet parents are traveling with their pets now more than ever. Having a pet-perfect brewery, restaurant, vacation rental, store, etc. helps to entice pet owners to frequent your establishment. Think of it this way, if a pet parent is on vacation with their dog in tow and wants to grab dinner, they’re more likely to go to the restaurant that not only allows dogs, but has clean water, treats, and pet-friendly staff to welcome their pet.

At the end of the day, being pet-perfect can help to increase bookings and reservations, create consumer loyalty, and have the potential to boost positive reviews and organic exposure on social media.

Pet-friendly versus pet-perfect

As a short-term rental owner, here are some key differences between the two approaches:

How to be pet-friendly How to be pet-perfect
Stock essential items such as stainless steel bowls, poo bags, treats, toys, pet beds, and cleaning supplies to enhance the pet experience. Include easy-to-clean enrichment items like puzzle toys for mental stimulation and cat condos for play.
Install secure fencing for outdoor safety. Replace flooring with materials like bamboo or cork that are easy-to-clean and slip-resistant for pets.
Create specific spaces for pets to rest and relieve themselves, ideally with a fenced yard or secure outdoor areas. Provide crates for indoor comfort, especially for anxious pets.
Stay informed about local health concerns, wildlife, and necessary vaccinations for pets. Offer recommendations for pet-friendly local attractions, including pet-friendly restaurants, parks, and emergency vet services and shelters.
Outline any rental-specific pet policies that you wish to be followed, mitigating risk and ensuring a safe stay. Offer to receive and hold shipments of pet supplies for guests, alleviating travel stress and potentially generating extra income.

Pet-perfect and accommodations

As we know, pet parents love to travel and oftentimes they’re bringing their pets with them. Being pet-perfect can only help attract this growing market of consumers, and it often starts with how hotels and short-term rentals show up for pets and their owners.

Hotels

From the moment that a consumer books with a hotel, they should know that they and their pets are going to receive top treatment.

  • Pet welcome kit. As a human might receive a welcome basket, so should pets! This can include pet beds, treats, bowls, and any other item a pet may need during their stay.
  • Pet-safe rooms. Pet-safe furniture and plants are important to keep in mind when decorating for a pet-perfect hotel room. Plus, certain furniture and flooring is easier to clean post-pet visit!
  • On-site pet amenities. Having designated pet-relief areas, a dog run, and dog walking routes available go a long way in not only keeping your property clean, but making pets and their parents happy, too.
  • Pet concierge. At the very least, there should be people available on property who can speak to information on local vets, local parks, and pet-friendly shopping and restaurants.

Short-term rentals

The short-term rental market is teeming with opportunity for growth in the pet space. From understanding why you should engage the pet market to how to create the best pet policy, we have everything you need to know on how to host pets in your vacation rentals.

Pet-perfect and retail

It’s a real treat when we’re able to bring our pets out shopping with us and retail spaces that go the extra mile put themselves in a prime position for pet owners to return to. Some of the ways that retail spaces can go beyond pet-friendly are:

  • Offering access. Allowing pets to accompany their owners (with any necessary restrictions) is the first step to pet-perfect.
  • Provide pet amenities. Going beyond pet-friendly, have amenities like treats, water, and waste bags/cleaning stations accessible.
  • Design safe spaces. Designing your store with all users in mind (including pets) with choice of aisle size and flooring matters.
  • Have pet products for sale. If a consumer is going to be shopping for your wares, have some for their pets!

Pet-perfect and hospitality

We’re already seeing more and more hospitality spaces welcoming pets, but how can we level up these meccas for connection to better include pets?

Restaurants

As long as pets aren’t back in the kitchen, having them in restaurants poses a low-risk for unhealthy contact. While not every restaurant makes a good candidate for welcoming pets, for those that do, being pet-perfect can come naturally.

  • Water stations. Simple, but having water available (and regularly replenished) shows a level of care and concern.
  • Pet menu. If you’re already serving people, why not have a small, simple menu for pets with safe, healthy options like grilled chicken or unseasoned veggies.
  • Doggy bags. Where do you think the name came from? Offering to-go snacks and treats to pets who attend meals alongside their owners is a great way to build a relationship.

But, it’s important for pet owners to do their part as well. According to Dr. Erica Irish, “a dog can be outwardly "healthy" but still carry zoonotic parasites like hookworms, and dogs on raw diets can make people sick when they lick people or objects. Studies from the University of Liverpool explain which pathogenic bacteria we should be concerned about when pets eat raw diets.”

This means that pet owners should not only make sure their dog is up to date on parasite preventatives, like Heartguard, they should also consider the risks associated with a raw food diet for their dog. Allergies to dogs may also be a consideration, which means that pet owners should groom their dogs prior to visiting any public place.

Breweries and bars

Anecdotally, we’ve seen dog owners choose gathering spaces like breweries or bars that are pet-friendly over those that aren’t. They can take a page or two out of a restaurant’s book with their pet amenities, but they can also consider adding other things like:

  • Dog-friendly swag. Branded pet items that are either given away or for sale for Fido to wear shows that you’re thinking of your consumer and what’s important to them.
  • Pet-themed events. Everyone loves showing off their pet, and events that are pet-specific attract pet owners to create community with your bar or brewery as the center of it.

Sports

While pets aren’t always the best guests at sporting events, having special nights during the season where people’s pets can come and enjoy the sights is a great opportunity. The Charlotte Knights, a minor league baseball team in Charlotte, NC, welcome pets to several games throughout the season at Bark in the Ballpark and the pictures speak for themselves on how happy everyone is to be there.
